Gorson Bugyal (meadows)

From Auli, an easy grade day hike 4 km, approx. 3 hrs. Option to hire pony for the trek is available
This easy grade 4 km uphill hike to Gorson Bugyal starts from Auli top. The trail passes through deodar (cedar) tree forest. Rhododendrons bloom in April here. Enroute there is a beautiful local temple. Gorson Bugyal is a spectacular lush green meadows with expansive 360 degree Himalayan Panorama and stunning views of Nanda Devi on one side and Barmal on the other. Meadows adorn a carpet of tiny wild flowers post monsoon. Sparkling white, snow- covered meadows is a different but spectacular sight in winters. Day hike to Gorson Bugyal is almost a ‘must visit’ if you are in Auli anytime of the year.

Joshimath

From Auli, 15 km, approx. 45 min drive
Joshimath (or ‘Jyotirmath’ as called in olden days or ‘Kartikeyapura’ as named originally) is one of the four centres established by Adi Shankracharya. Joshimath is a main town and a hub for various trekking and holiday destinations in the region. Drive and explore Joshimath main market, stroll in the small but busy local market area, visit famous Shankaracharya Math (shrine), Kalpavriksha and Narsimha temple.

Chhatra Lake

From Auli, an easy grade day hike 3 km, approx. 2 hrs. Option to hire pony for the trek is available
Just 3 km beyond Auli, lies a small but beautiful Chhatra lake. Surrounded by dense forests of Oaks and Pine trees, the sun rays rarely reach the waters of this lake. The lake, the ever-green forest makes this place as a calming green experience in peaceful setting.

Badrinath & border village Mana

From Auli , 70 km, approx. 3 hr drive
Auli to Badrinath is a beautiful drive via Vishnu Prayag (last of the famous five confluences on Holy river Ganga) with views of Neelkanth peak and Kheer Ganga valley. You could also sight Himalayan wildlife on this route, if lucky. Badrinath is a famous Vishnu temple (one amongst “Char Dham” and most popular).
Beautiful border village Mana (the last village on Indo-Tibet border) is just 3 km from Badrinath. This scenic Himalayan village is known for its mesmerizing views, ancient Bheem Pul, Vyas Gumfa (ancient cave where the epic “Mahabharata” was written), Saraswati Kund (source of river Saraswati) and can be explored on foot with a short walk.

Urgam valley & Kalpeshwar

From Auli, 40 km, approx. 1.5 hr drive and an easy grade day hike 4-5 km, approx. 3 hrs. Option to hire pony for the trek is available.
Urgam is a typical Himalayan village. Very scenic. With Nanda Devi peak in sight, it is a short easy grade very enjoyable hike to reach Kalpeshwar - a famous temple of Lord Shiva (one of the five Kedars and the only one which is accessible round the year).
An opportunity to interact with the “Sadhus” (saints), understanding their living, experiencing typical Himalayan village culture in this agriculturally rich scenic valley can be unique experiences. On this trek, you could also enjoy your time near a beautiful waterfall.

Understanding tough lifestyle of locals can be an enriching experience.

Tapovan, Lata and Reni village

From Auli, 40 km, approx. 1.5 hr drive.
Take a short valley walk crossing over a beautiful suspension bridge over river Dhauli Ganga. Visit local Kaali Maata temple (Goddess Kali) in village Reni (famous for “Chipko” movement). Experience village culture, interact with locals and understand Himalayan traditions. At Tapovan enjoy the natural sulphur hot springs.
If you seek more, drive upto village Lata and trek up 3 km to see the very famous Nanda Devi temple. This temple can be accessed only from April to October.

Over the years, more than a dozen International and national level skiing championships have been successfully conducted in Auli. With such popularity, Auli is fast gaining a prominent spot in the world map of skiing and winter sports.

Some of the key skiing facilities in Auli include:

  • A state of the art ski lift, imported from France. This 500 mts long ski lift is the longest in the country.
  • 800 mts long chair lift, linking the lower ski slopes with upper ski slopes in Auli.
  • Two snows-beaters imported from Germany .
  • An artificial lake, a water/snow reservoir, which can help in maintaining the right snow level on ski slopes even in case of insufficient snow fall during winters.
  • 4.5 kms long ropeway linking Joshimath with Auli. This ropeway covers a track distance of 4.5 kms and is the longest ropeway in Asia with zig back system. The ropeway has ten towers of self-supporting steel structure with saddles and shoes. Remote controlled hydraulic and pneumatic braking system makes it the safest ropeway. Besides, most sophisticated electronic circuitry with telemetry and storm- warning devices are used to minimize probability of Human error.

How to reach Auli


Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (17 km from Rishikesh, 26 km from Dehradun city and 310 km from Auli)

Rail: The nearest rail heads are Haridwar and Dehradun (274 km from Auli).

Road: Auli is only a 15 km dive from Joshimath. Hire taxis are easily available from Joshimath to Auli in all seasons. State transport and union buses ply regularly between Joshimath and Rishikesh (257 kms), Haridwar (281 km), Dehradun(298 km) and New Delhi (500 km). Auli is relatively safe for travelling by road in your own vehicle.

Very cold with regular snowfall, freezing climate, temperature in Auli varies from -4 to 17°C during January-February-March.
